One of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world, no city in Europe is quite like Athens; the old and the new intersperse making it a fascinating short break destination - it is also a great place to start or end your holiday to the Cyclades. 

Dominated by it famous fifth century landmark the Acropolis, Athens is Greece’s largest and most populous city.  It’s history dates back at least 3400 years during that time it was one of Greece’s foremost city states.  It became the capital of modern Greece in 1834 following the Greek War of Independence.  

Athens immerses you in its history, with the magnificence of the Acropolis, Roman monuments, ancient Byzantine churches, neo-classical architecture and world class museums.  Nowhere is this mix of different eras more evident than in Monastiraki Square a great place to sit sip coffee and people watch. If you are interested in ancient history Athens is a city you really should visit. 

Athens is not just for history lovers, if you love food and drink you will find a diverse high quality food scene, head of Psiri for some great eateries. Shoppers will enjoy the buzz of fashionable Ermou Street  and the countless upmarket jewellery shops clustered around Syntagma, Plaka and Kolonaki.    

Romantics can stroll through the winding ancient streets of Plaka, spend long lazy afternoons in traditional taverna’s and sip cocktails on roof tops terraces in the shadow of the Acropolis. It is also the city that never sleeps so if you are a night owl there is always somewhere open.
