Koufonisia and Small Cyclades

What we think "turquoise waters, secluded beaches, and traditional Cycladic architecture"

Tiny Koufonisia one of the group of islands known as the “small Cyclades” lies on the south east side of Naxos and north west of Amorgos.  It is in fact made up of two islands Pano (or upper) Koufonisia and uninhabited Kato Koufonisia.  There is evidence of human habitation in Koufonisia since pre-historic times, and the nearby uninhabited island of Keos is a significant archaeological site.

Pano Koufonisia is around 5.8 km2 in size and has just the one settlement Chora, it is mainly free of traffic but as it is so small you can easily walk the island in a day or rent a bike to see the stunning scenery.

Chora is located on the south of the island it is a picture-perfect little village with traditional whitewashed houses with blue shutters and balconies, winding pathways adorned with bougainvillea, blue domed churches and disused windmills. In Chora you will find taverna’s, café’s and shops.

The main occupation of the locals apart from tourism is fishing and fresh fish is abundant in this tiny islands lovely taverna’s.

Koufonisia has beautiful sandy beaches with crystal clear waters that have hues of turquoise and emerald that tempt you to swim, it is an island for total relaxation, leave all your worries on the ferry when you disembark, take a few good books, escape, relax and eat well in this tiny paradise.

If you would like a holiday that includes any of the other “small Cyclades” islands of   Donoussa, Schinoussa or Iraklia please let us know.
