Syros is an enchanting little island with a wealth of religious, cultural and industrial history.

Being the administrative capital of the Cyclades the capital and port town of Ermoupolis is vibrant and full of life the whole year round. Bars and restaurants line the harbour which is a great place to sit with a drink people watching whilst the yachts and boats come in and out. The town has much to offer with it's large marble square (Miaouli Square) in front of the wonderful town hall. Syros has its own theatre the Apollo which was built in 1864 and influenced by La Scala in Milan. You can visit the theatre for a look around during the day for a small price, or attend one of its many operatic performances. Ermoupolis is also the home to the Cyclades only casino.

Ano-Syros
 

Overlooking the port it is the historical capital of the island Ano-Syros which was built during the late Byzantine period and is typically Cycladean with its radial design. It was historically the Catholic part of the island and right at the top stands the magnificent Catholic Church of St George, you can also visit a small museum in honour of Markos Vamvakaris the famous Greek Rebetiko musician who was born in Ano-Syros. There are bars and restaurants where you can sit and take in the wonderful views over the port to the Aegean Sea.
Outside of the capital it becomes noticeably more relaxed with some lovely little beach resorts including Galissas, Vari, Finikas and Kini from where you can take a boat to some of the more isolated beaches in the north.

Heritage and Culture
The archaeological sites of Chalandriani and Kastri are situated in the north of the island. Chaladriani is a prehistoric acropolis dating back to the 3rd millennium BC which was discovered after excavations carried out in the late 19th century.

Syros is centrally located and can be combined with many other islands. It also works well with a short break to Athens and Thessaloniki in the summer.
